Design in Practice is a product design consultancy with its headquarters in West Sussex, UK.

We work with start-ups to global businesses in a wide variety of sectors. The Design in Practice team has recently designed products in consumer electronics, fixed line and mobile telecoms, nursery products, domestic appliances and kitchenware.

Profile Nick Vessey, Founder and Managing Director

After graduating from Sheffield City Polytechnics Product Design course, Nick went on to complete an MA at Central School of Art & Design in London.

In 1999 he co-founded "the alloy" a leading UK product design consultancy. He recently left to form Design in Practice.

Having worked in professional practice at the highest level for over 25 years, Nick has considerable experience in helping companies to use design to improve people’s lives.

The Ferrari by Logic3 collection by Design in Practice

January 2012; twelve audio products were showcased for the first time at CES in Las Vegas. The project was delivered to meet the client’s aggressive timescales; from start to mass production in under 12 months.

Nick Vessey from Design in Practice and Chris Emmett from Design by Em (www.designbyem.co.uk) were selected by Logic3 to help them extend one of the world’s most iconic automotive brands into the premium audio sector.

The main design challenge was to identify the most relevant Ferrari attributes such as its rich heritage and attention to detail and to apply them in a meaningful and non-gratuitous way, applicable to high-end speaker docks and headphone devices.

Another key consideration was to ensure the design specification could be faithfully implemented by the various manufacturers using high quality materials such as real leather and machined metals. The new products are split into 2 collections;

The Ferrari Cavallino Collection was inspired by Ferrari’s GT road cars, where power and performance are united with the quality of the detail and the constant drive to meet the customer’s greatest expectations. This resonates across the collection, through the perfection of the detail, the superior quality of the materials, and the careful craftsmanship.

The Scuderia Ferrari Collection reflects the passion, enthusiasm, and success enjoyed by the Ferrari F1 team and its fans. The products within this collection are inspired by the technological innovations of the F1 team. They embody the “racing soul” that underlies the character of Ferrari.

The product design represents only one part of the story. Nick and Chris also worked closely with leading acoustic laboratories in California and the Far East to ensure the products sound as good as they look.
